Anabaena (algae) is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that exists as plankton. It is known for its nitrogen fixing abilities, and it forms symbiotic relationships with certain aquatic plants. Cyanobacteria are the most successful group of microorganisms on earth. They are the most genetically diverse, and occupy a broad range of habitats across all latitudes; widespread in freshwater, marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
